The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a top temperature of 8.0ºC at the Echuca Aerodrome.
That figure smashed a few records in the process.
It represented the coldest day in the twin towns since a day in July 2010 when the mercury inched its way to a top of 6.2ºC.
It was the coldest June day for 20 years, going back to 2003 when a top temperature of 7.7ºC was recorded.
Despite the bitter conditions, the top temperature was far warmer than the long-standing record for the coldest day ever in Echuca-Moama.
That was a positively balmy 3.8ºC on June 3, 1957.
It came as no surprise that Wednesday morning was also our coldest of the year, with a frosty -2.5ºC recorded.
That figure surpassed the -1.8ºC recorded on May 18.
Even with this latest cold snap, Echuca-Moama’s mean temperature for June has been warmer than average (15.3ºC compared to 13.5ºC).
Across the region, Shepparton shivered through its coldest day in decades on Wednesday, including the lowest maximum temperature ever recorded at the Shepparton Airport weather station.
The Bureau of Meteorology recorded a top temperature of 6.6ºC in Shepparton on June 21, making it the coldest day ever recorded at the location.
Since the airport took over from the Lemnos (Campbell’s Soup) station in January 1996, the lowest maximum temperature in Shepparton had been 6.7ºC, recorded on July 11, 1996.
Wednesday was the coldest day in Shepparton since July 9, 1995, where a cold snap saw the mercury reach 6.1ºC (on July 8) and 6.4ºC on consecutive days.
It was even cooler in Kyabram, with a top of 6.1ºC, while further along the Murray River, Mildura and Swan Hill each hit 10.4ºC.
Temperatures are on track to remain below average on Friday but it’s set to warm up after that, according to Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Miriam Bradbury.
“The last couple of mornings we’ve seen 4ºC to 8ºC below the average across large parts of the east coast; tomorrow morning we’re kind of only looking at one to three degrees below average,” Ms Bradbury said.
Friday’s forecast top is 12ºC, followed by 14ºC on Saturday, 13 ºC on Sunday and 15ºC on Monday.
