The Atlantic City Police Department says two people from New York have been arrested for promoting prostitution.
Last Saturday morning, June 17th, ACPD officers were called to a motel in the 3000 block of Pacific Avenue for a report of human trafficking.
Officers at the scene spoke with an individual who reported that they believed a woman was being forced into prostitution.
The officers contacted the occupants of a motel room and after speaking with the victim, the other occupants in the room, 44-year-old Colin Sherwood of New York City and 44-year-old Jamy Mathis of Brooklyn, NY, were arrested.
An investigation conducted by Detectives James Barrett and Alberto Valles revealed text messages between Sherwood and Mathis that indicated their involvement in prostitution. The victim was assaulted and threatened with physical harm if she refused to participate.
Both Sherwood and Mathis were charged with human trafficking and promoting prostitution. They were remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility.
The public is reminded that charges are accusations and all persons are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
