Claremont Showground will turn green on Saturday when more than 40 grassroots environmental groups join forces to educate on embracing a sustainable future.
The inaugural Curtin Sustainability Fair will showcase innovative organisations and community groups from across Perth who will provide tips on how to live more environmentally conscious.
Stalls will cover topics from eco architecture, fermented foods, recycling and electric vehicles to sustainable sourdough baking.
The next generation of climate warriors from the Bob Hawke Sustainability Club, Methodist Ladies’ College Sustainability Club and Millennium Kids will speak about how they are taking action against waste and the climate crisis.
The Western Metropolitan Regional Council will provide tips on handling recycling and embracing FOGO, while the WA Tree Canopy Advocates will share their goal of achieving 30 per cent canopy cover by 2040.
WATCA manager Nick Cook said they had grown to 22 groups across the metro area and Geraldton, with more than 15,000 members.
“It has really taken off; there has been a lot of talk in the media about tree canopy and it just seems that it’s something that everybody is concerned about and the State Government seems to be listening now,” he said.
Curtin independent MP Kate Chaney is hosting the event and said responding to climate change and biodiversity were the two top issues she was contacted about in the electorate.
“I think a lot of people in my community really want to be part of a pathway to net zero but it’s hard to know what to actually do day to day and what you can change,” she said.
“So this is really about giving people practical tips for how they can make different decisions in your own life.
“There are lots of things that we can do that really are not that difficult and proactively contribute to changing the way we live.”
Ms Chaney said groups in the Curtin electorate had the ideas to be leading the way on sustainable practices.
“There’s so many people in this community who have so much to offer … and I think that’s something we have to offer Perth and WA and the country,” she said.
The fair will be held at the Jim Webster Pavilion from 10am to 4pm.
