“We’re off to a great summer,” said Regina Vesely, director of the Horsham Township Department of Library & Recreation Services.
On Friday night, Vesely participated in a ribbon-cutting ceremony along with Horsham Township Council President McCouch and Vice President Bill Whiteside and librarians Ellyn Benner and Bryan Sotnyk, and Library Board member Janet Whiteside.
They cut the ribbon for the new programming porch along with launching the summer reading program. There was also a visit from Daniel Tiger.
The porch will host all outdoor reading activities, Vesely said.
The project was made possible by Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) funds from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Office of Commonwealth Libraries.
Those funds amounted to a $500 grant which the library put to good use by creating StoryWalk, a new summer reading program at noon every Monday for eight weeks during the summer. The first story took place Monday.
Vesely said that children can walk on a path around the library, stopping to read each page as they move along the loop.
“It’s a fun new way to read,” she said. “You get to do reading and exercise.”
The library has also changed its look with the introduction of a new logo on June 1.
Vesely said the logo’s color scheme represents the order of each colorful window in the turret of the Story Room as seen when children look up during Story Time sessions.
“We chose this image as a base for our new logo as we feel the Story Room and Story Time are the core of our services and set a foundation of lifelong literacy and community. The colors are bright and inviting and playful and we hope our library can be all of those things too,” she added.
The “htl” version of our logo includes an allusion to the Horsham Township tagline “A Community Connected.”
“We view ourselves as a central hub in the Township and as a place for neighbors to meet and share and learn together,” Vesely said.
The final new feature is the Library of Things.
This area allows people to check out unique items like an ice cream maker, power tools or a bass guitar amp before deciding to make a purchase.
Vesely said the Friends of the Horsham Library made the collection possible.
