It’s not about the destination, it’s about the journey! These are the most epic road trips to take around Australia this winter (and here’s how to enjoy them even if you don’t have your own car)
While some people may think that road trips are best enjoyed in summer, climbing into the car for a winter break can create pure magic and the very best of memories.
From exploring the breathtaking coastal views of the Great Ocean Road to driving across incredible snowscapes in Kosciuszko National Park or experiencing the natural wonders of Tasmania, there is so much to enjoy by road no matter where you are in Australia.
And if you don’t own your own car you can still hit the road, thanks to Uber’s Carshare service. You can search for cars, vans and utes near you to book a vehicle, so you can still enjoy an awesome road trip this winter too.
With contactless pick up with Instant Key, 24 hour support and basic damage and loss cover included, Uber Carshare is the hassle-free way to enjoy a winter road trip.
So where should you head off to?
1) Great Ocean Road
If you haven’t explored the Great Ocean Road now is your time to do it. While the route from surf capital Torquay to historic fishing village Port Fairy will take around 9.5 hours, it’s best to take your time and break up the journey over several days or even a week, to truly savour the majesty of the region.
Wrap up warm at famous surfing haven Bell’s Beach, take in the views of the Saint George River emptying into the Bass Strait at Teddy’s look out, plan a hike in the Great Otway National Park, see the awe-inspiring view of the 12 Apostles and make sure you visit Logans Beach Whale Viewing Platform to catch the best glimpse of the migrating whales.
2) Sydney to Orange (via the Blue Mountains)
There’s nothing like driving through the Blue Mountains to feel a sense of perspective and awe. Venturing through the 1,200km of sealed road you’ll find dramatic landscapes and wonderful viewing spots, historic villages, delicious food and cosy places to stay.
Don’t stop your trip in the mountains though, continue on to Orange to enjoy the hospitality of the cool climate wineries, gourmet food options and local produce shops. If you’re planning a trip during the first half of August you’ll be in town for the Orange Winter Fire Festival, which unlike that Fyre festival, definitely won’t disappoint.
3) Kosciuszko National Park
A trip to Kosciuszko National Park is an absolute must this winter if you’re considering hitting the slopes. Uber Carshare takes the hassle out of trying to cram everything into your usual car, allowing you to pick up an SUV, ute or a van close to home, meaning you’ll have enough room for everyone’s skis, snowboards, boots, gear and more.
The journey along Kosciuszko Alpine Way is steeped in history and culture, so even if you’re not keen to ski, you can plan a stop to hike to Australia’s highest peak, enjoy some snow play time with your kids or taste a Kosciuszko Pale Ale, all while breathing in that fresh alpine air.
4) Alice Springs to Uluru
Avoid the intense heat of the summer and the dust too, by taking the bucket list journey from Alice Springs to Uluru during winter. It’s also the perfect season to enjoy absolutely breathtaking stargazing at nighttime too.
From the sandstone, pinnacles and gorges of Palm Valley to the awe-inspiring views of Kings Canyon, the photogenic landscapes of Rainbow Valley and of course the sheer beauty and power of mighty Uluru, soak up all the magic on this epic 467km drive.
5) Hobart to Cradle Mountain
It’s hard not to fall in love with Tassie on a road trip from Hobart to Cradle Mountain. Our advice is to load up your car, ute or van, and if you don’t have one you can book one through Uber Carshare, and take the scenic route.
See heritage-listed landmarks in Richmond, view the Callington Mill, the only operating colonial windmill in the southern hemisphere, eat delicious local produce and work it off hiking in Launceston and schedule in a stop at Liffey Falls before you reach Cradle Mountain. You won’t regret it.
