This Wednesday marks Wear Orange Wednesday (WOW) – a national day encouraging communities to don an orange outfit to support their local SES volunteers.
Rockhampton Regional Council Mayor and Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Tony Williams said he is keen to witness a sea of orange on Wednesday.
“WOW Day is a fantastic opportunity to show how thankful we are for the tireless efforts of the volunteers and the hard work they put in year-round,” Mayor Williams said.
“I encourage Council staff and the community to wear something orange to show your support for our volunteers.
“We are incredibly lucky to have three dedicated and long-term SES groups in our region with bases in Rockhampton, Gracemere and Mount Morgan, with over 120 volunteers combined.
“These volunteers do so much for our area, and we have seen this first-hand during various natural disasters our region has experienced.
“The skills, dedication and support provided by all the agencies during disasters, including SES, Queensland Fire and Rescue, and Queensland Police Service, are invaluable.
“So, show your gratitude and dig into your cupboard for a splash of orange to wear this Wednesday.”
Deputy Chair of the Local Disaster Management Group Councillor Drew Wickerson said WOW Day is an annual initiative that brings a smile to his face.
“I am proud Council is involved with WOW Day each year as it is a great opportunity to display our appreciation,” Cr Wickerson said.
“As a local SES volunteer who has assisted in various areas, I have seen first-hand the dedication these groups have to our community.
“Their commitment to protecting and supporting our region is outstanding – I don’t know what we would do without them.
“I will be wearing orange on Wednesday, and I would love to see our community sporting an orange outfit as well.”
Local SES Controller Eddie Cowie said Wear Orange Wednesday also brings the opportunity to welcome prospective new recruits.
“After COVID, we are looking to rebuild our capability with new volunteers in all SES Groups,” Mr Cowie said.
“We have a strong volunteer base across the three groups in our SES Unit, but there is always room for more. We are always keen to welcome new SES recruits.
“If you like the outdoors, are fit and healthy, and meet the joining criteria needed to become an SES recruit, we would love to chat with you. Many recruits bring their life experiences to the group, creating a strong link when working as a team.
“Everyone is welcome to attend a free BBQ to celebrate WOW Day at the Kershaw Gardens from 11am to 1pm on Wednesday the 17th of May, near the playgrounds off Moores Creek Road.”
