A man has been shot in the street by police in Brisbane’s north.
Officers were called to a residence at Burkell Court in Bray Park at about 12.30pm after receiving reports of a domestic incident between a man and a woman.
The situation then escalated, leading to a 45-year-old man sustaining gunshot wounds from the attending officers.
Detective Superintendent Ben Fadian said the officers felt threatened at the moment that shots were fired.
“Initial indications are the police felt threatened to the point they had to use force to resolve the situation,” he said.
“And police are trained to use a minimal amount of force necessary to resolve a situation. On this occasion they have used force to try and resolve the situation.”
Police fired “a number of shots” at the man.
Superintendent Fadian would not comment on whether the man was acting threateningly towards the officers or the woman at the scene, nor whether a Taser was deployed before the firearm was discharged.
Residents who also lived at the address and within the street witnessed the incident.
Superintendent Fadian did not confirm whether children living at the address were witnesses.
A nearby resident said she heard shots being fired.
“I heard it, it went at about 12.42 with three quick gunshots ‘bang, bang, bang’ and about 10 minutes later all the police and the ambulances were all in this street,” she told 9 News.
The man is now receiving treatment for gunshot wounds at the Royal Brisbane Hospital.
An investigation has been launched into the incident by the Ethical Standards Command with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.
The officers were “experienced” according to Superintendent Fadian.
