WASHINGTON – Do educational degrees play a strong role in shaping a political career? The answer is no. The reason is, only a few world leaders have doctoral or PhD degrees achieved by education or academics.

Here are 4 world leaders who are either in power or not in power who have a doctorate or PhD.

1.Angela Merkel

Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel is one of the world’s current leaders with a PhD. She became Germany’s first female chancellor in 2005.

Previously, he studied physics at the University of Leipzig from 1973 to 1978 and earned his PhD in quantum chemistry in 1986 from the German Academy of Sciences.

2. Guðni Th. Johannesson

President Guðni Th. Jóhannesson has a range of academic credentials. He studied history and political science at the University of Warwick and completed his BA in 1991.

After that, the man graduated with a master’s degree in history from the University of Iceland in 1997. He also studied at the University of Oxford in England and graduated with a Master of Studies in history in 1999.

In 2003, he completed his PhD in history at Queen Mary, University of London.

Jóhannesson took office in 2016 after winning the most votes in the 2016 election with 71,356 (39.1%). He was re-elected in 2020 with 92.2% of the vote.

3. Woodrow Wilson
