BIRR’S beloved and incredibly talented singer-songwriter Mundy is bringing a cracking show featuring a number of outstanding musicians to the County Arms Hotel Birr at the beginning of July.
The show gets underway at 5.30pm on Sunday July 2nd and you’re strongly advised to book in advance as the tickets are selling quickly.
Mundy grew up in Birr and loves coming back here to perform. As a teenager playing in Birr’s pubs many years ago everyone knew that he was a special talent who could go far, and so it proved to be.
“I love playing in my home town,” he said. “It’s where I spent my formative years and I feel at home here. As such, every time I perform I try to give it my best shot. I’ve invited some very talented opening acts whom I know the audience is going to enjoy.
“It kicks off with Paddy Casey. Paddy is an old friend of mine from Dublin that I met when we were both busking on Grafton Street many years ago. Paddy went on to be one of Ireland’s biggest singer-songwriters with a song called ‘Saints and Sinners’ from the album ‘Living’. We were both signed to subsidiary labels of Sony, and Paul McGuinness of U2 fame managed Paddy for a while. Paddy has a great gift for writing catchy, anthemic songs.”
The second opening act is El Mush, a group of skillful musicians from Birr who bring great energy and considerable enthusiasm to their sets. These talented people are all very well known locally and are Macdara Deery, Timmy Fogarty, Stephen De Forge, and Ciaran Swift. They are old friends of Mundy’s going back 35 years “when we used to play regularly in my Dad’s pub in Emmet Square.”
The third opening act is Nicole Maguire who is a singer songwriter from Cork with a lovely voice. She loves performing Nashville style country music. Nicole has been an opening act at many of Mundy’s shows over the years.
Ger Eaton performs next. Ger is a member of Mundy’s band but is also a great solo artist, as the audience will hear on the night. Ger will be performing a number of his own songs.
Number 5 in the line-up is the massively popular Brownie Guinan from Ferbane. Brownie has just released an acclaimed album and his energy and talent is hugely appreciated by audiences.
The final opening act is Darragh Molloy who is a multi-instrumentalist with a grá for blue grass.
Then on comes Mundy who will play many crowd-pleasing favourites from the repertoire spanning his career, including some new songs from his forthcoming album, a few surprise duets and ending with an all star finale. His backing band is Ger Eaton (keyboards), Gavin Fox (bass), Sarah Lynch (violin), Brian Grace (electric guitar), and Stephen Kiernan (drums).
After the show there will be a disco til late. Popular Birr man Dickie Donnelly will be the DJ.
Mundy hopes to make this gig, which he’s calling “Oh My July Fest”, an annual event in Birr, supporting upcoming and local musicians.
He elaborated on his love of Birr. “Almost everything I write comes back to Birr; in songs such as ‘Spring Town,’ ‘I Miss the Country’, and ‘Dark Long Enough’. I’ve written songs about Birr in my forthcoming album. My home’s in Dublin with my wife and two children, but it’s also here in this beautiful town.”
Tickets are €31 and can be bought from TicketStop.ie or by calling the County Arms at (057) 91 20791.
