Genoa, WI (KROC-AM News)- Authorities in Wisconsin are investigating an officer-involved shooting that left a person dead.
A news release issued by the Wisconsin Department of Justice Division of Criminal Investigation says deputies with the Vernon County Sheriff’s were dispatched to a welfare check in the small river town on Genoa, which is about 18 miles south of La Crosse. The request for service came in shortly before 6 p.m. Friday.
Responding deputies saw the subject of the welfare check drive away from the residence. Law enforcement then conducted a traffic stop and reported the subject fled at a high rate of speed as deputies approached the vehicle.
Officials say the deputy grabbed onto the vehicle and was hanging onto it as it fled. The deputy then opened fire at the subject, who was pronounced dead at the scene.
No other injuries were reported. The deputies involved in the deadly incident were wearing body cameras and the deputy who fired the gun has been placed on administrative assignment, the news release says.
The names of the suspect and deputy have not been released. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is investigating the deadly officer-involved shooting.
