Binghamton, New York- The Portland Sea Dogs (38-24) double down to defeat the Binghamton Rumble Ponies (30-31) 9-1 on Saturday night.
Corey Rosier recorded a season-high four hits after hitting three doubles and a single while Ceddanne Rafaela, Alex Binelas, and Tyler McDonough also had multi-hit days at the plate.
Chase Meidorth worked a walk in the top of the first to extend his team-leading on-base streak to twenty-two games. Portland took the early lead with two runs in the inning courtesy of a two-RBI double from Phillip Sikes (13).
The scoring continued in the top of the third after an RBI single from Alex Binelas along with an RBI double from Corey Rosier (10) to put Portland up 4-0.
In the top of the fourth, Chase Meidroth reached on a fielder’s choice allowing Nick Yorke to score and Portland led, 5-0.
Tyler McDonough hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth to score Binelas and extend the 6-0 lead.
An RBI single from Brandon McIlwain in the bottom of the sixth put Binghamton on the board.
Portland plated three runs in the top of the seventh as Nathan Hickey led it off with a solo home run to record his sixth of the season. Corey Rosier hit his third double of the ballgame before a pair of back-to-back RBI doubles from McDonough and Rafaela put Portland on top, 9-1.
Portland starter RHP Brian Van Belle (5-3, 2.70 ERA) earned the win after pitching 6.0 innings allowing just one run on four hits while walking two and striking out five. Binghamton starter RHP Junior Santos (3-5, 6.25 ERA) was issued the loss after pitching 5.0 innings allowing six runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out two.
The Sea Dogs return to Mirabito Stadium tomorrow, June 18, 2023 for the final game of a six-game series against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. First pitch for game six is slated for 6:35pm. Portland will send RHP Sterling Sharp (2-0, 3.63 ERA) to the mound while Binghamton will start RHP Jose Chacin (1-3, 5.61 ERA).
