Several clubs have bid farewell to players in recent weeks following the conclusion of the 2022/23 Premier League season. Notable farewells include four Liverpool legends, led by Roberto Firmino, as well as the relegation of Leicester City, fairytale title winners just seven years ago, to the Championship, the second tier of English football. The top league on the planet has now released an official list of players who will be released by each of the 20 clubs from the previous season, totaling over 160 players who will be packing their bags by June 30, with some exceptions.
The Premier League free transfers
The English Premier League states that players designated as free transfers, those released when their contracts expire on June 30, 2023, may still remain at their clubs for the next season. Therefore, this list is not definitive for players leaving their clubs. This applies to players like David De Gea and Ilkay Gündogan.
Both the Manchester United goalkeeper and the Manchester City captain have been included in their respective clubs’ lists of released players. However, their contractual situations are far from resolved. United is reportedly in negotiations to extend De Gea’s contract, while City is awaiting Gündogan’s decision, which he stated would be made after the Champions League final.
Confirmed departures of notable players include the aforementioned Firmino, who was bid farewell with honors by teammates and manager Jürgen Klopp. Youri Tielemans will be heading to Unai Emery’s Aston Villa once his contract expires on June 30, and Benjamin Mendy, who has been involved in numerous legal proceedings, will part ways with Man City after six years. Other players such as Jefferson Lerma, James Milner, and Naby Keita have already announced their respective moves to Crystal Palace, Brighton, and Werder Bremen.
The free agent market in the Premier League has a significant number of players who are currently without a team or specific offers and they are expected to attract interest from various suitors during the summer transfer window.
Worth mentioning are Ainsley Maitland-Niles (Arsenal), Ashley Young (Aston Villa), Pontus Jansson (Brentford), Tiémoué Bakayoko (Chelsea), Jack Butland and Luka Milivojevic (Crystal Palace), Yerry Mina (Everton), Joel Robles (Leeds United), Ayoze Pérez and Çaglar Söyüncü (Leicester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool) , Phil Jones (Manchester United), Jesse Lingard (Nottingham Forest), Willy Caballero and Theo Walcott (Southampton), Lucas Moura (Tottenham), Manuel Lanzini (West Ham); Diego Costa, João Moutinho and Adama Traoré (Wolvehampton).
