Local man Shane O’Doherty wins the 1km race

The popular Metalman Swim Series took place on Saturday last in calm conditions at Rosses Point.
A record 370 swimmers competed in the largest open water swim in the northwest.
Action got underway with the 1km race with Sligo Swim Club’s Shane O’Doherty holding off Ballyshannon’s Eamon Mcginn to take first place.
Aine O’Connor and Dublin’s Olivia Scanlon exchanged the lead along the way in the ladies, with Aine just edging it in the last 100m.
The 2km followed and Ballina’s Shane Dunne put in a blistering performance to hold onto his title again this year.
Mark Elliot, popular localman and organiser of the dip a day in December took second.
Tyrone’s Cathy Cunningham took an early lead and the ladies 2km with Elaina Sugrue of Sligo swim club in second place.
The afternoon’s action finished up with the 3km race.
Paul Colville marked his return from Fiji with an impressive victory taking the Brendan Currid Memorial Cup.
Katie McElroy won the ladies and the O’Connor Johnson cup.
