Even if you’ve not read Ulysses, the literary epic written by James Joyce, you will still find bundles of joy and cheer to be had at Bloomsday Festival. The city will see an array of Ulysses-themed activities happening this weekend in tribute to the infamous Irish writer, kicking off today and this Saturday as Embassy Gardens hosts their annual celebration. Traditionally held in Joyce’s motherland, Dublin, this year’s bash will be proudly held in London by Darby’s Oyster bar. It’ll be a Father Ted affair— lots of merriment, cedillas and of course, whiskey!
Cultivating together the works of creative Irish talents, the festival will also include live performances from writers, musicians and artists alike. Expect everything from spoken word, poetry to storytelling, traditional folk singing and Irish dancing— with writers including Niamh Mulvey, Trevor Kaneswaran, Aislinn Logan, Cathal Broderick and Video Blue.
After you have worked up an appetite from all the jigging about— why not treat yourself to a traditional Irish feast in the warm sunshine? Darby’s are serving up a delectable Bloomsday set menu with an array of wholesome dishes inspired by the words of the late writer. Dine on tender beef tartare with buttermilk and sizzling sour onions, Coine Valley lamb saddle with wild garlic butter and for dessert a strawberry bread pudding topped with freshly whipped meringue.
Or if you’d rather grab a quick bite to eat, there’ll be plenty of outdoor BBQ’s and grills at your disposal. Once you’re thoroughly satiated with grass-fed beef, take a wander through the makers market which will see a mecca of London-based Irish producers showcase their work and hand-made products. Simply an Irish blessing! Wrap up the day with whiskey tastings and cocktails served exclusively by Jameson Irish Whiskey. And perhaps one final Riverdance to end the evening— go on, you know you want to…
