Are you a North or South Carolina beach person? I feel like this can be a hot-button question. Living in Charlotte, it’s actually quicker to get to South Carolina beaches which is where I grew up going. In fact, I had never gone to an actual North Carolina beach until my early teens when a dance competition brought me to Ocean Isle. Since then I’ve spent some time on Topsail Island thanks to a good friend having a house there. I also have a few free places to stay in the Myrtle Beach, SC vicinity. But honestly, if I’m going to spend money to go to the beach it’s not going to be in North or South Carolina. Sorry. So when I stumbled upon this list of the beach beaches in the south I figured maybe an NC or SC beach would be near the bottom of the top 10. Imagine my surprise when I realized the second best beach in the South was in North Carolina.
Emerald Isle
Perhaps I grew up going to the wrong places? I haven’t been to Emerald Isle, the beach that took this silver medal on the USA Today 10 Best list. Emerald Isle is a town located on the Bouge Banks of the Outer Banks. This 5-square-mile town is home to emerald-colored waters that gave the town its name. There is no shortage of accommodations and restaurants to satisfy anyone, at least so I’ve read! And of course, the beach which is spacious and not near as crowded as other spots.
I would like to go to the Outer Banks eventually, it’s just when I can hop a flight to a Florida gulf beach, and be there before I could drive to OBX, well it’s hard to be willing to spend that time. I’m more of a blue-water kind of beach girl. Folly Beach in South Carolina also made the list, coming in at number 5 on the list. The best beach in the south went to Clearwater Beach, FL. These rankings were voted on by USA Today readers. USA Today travel experts narrowed down the field and then asked readers to vote on what they consider the 10 Best in a variety of categories.
