A man has sought refuge in a river after setting himself on fire, allegedly while torching a car, northeast of Perth.
Northam detectives said the accused, a 56-year-old man, set fire to a Kia Ultima on Hampton St in Northam about 8.05am Wednesday.

But the flames took hold of him, too.
“He ran from the address and into the Avon River, opposite Broome Tce,” WA Police said.
Dramatic vision shared by police showed a man sprinting towards the river, a trail of flames left in his wake.
The accused and another unknown man eventually left the area in a Holden Adventra.
Police have laid one charge of criminal damage by fire.
