Reigning premier Terip travelled to Mansfield to play Mansfield Red last Monday. The Terip girls were up and about ready for a good hit and the weather was perfect for tennis: no sun, no rain, and no wind, so no excuses.
The new balls were getting a bashing in the first sets with great drives and consistent tennis coming from Carolyn Murray and Karyn Fraser against Terip’s top pair of Cindy Hayes and Rebecca Lyttle.
Deuces were aplenty and scores were tight then Cindy and Bec placed some lovely sidelines and volleys to come away with the first set 8-4.
On the other court, there was a lot of laughter and rallies, but locals Deb McCormack and Loretta Armitage unfortunately couldn’t get the better end of the rallies and Phoebe McDermid and Melissa McDowell won the set 8-3.
The excellent tennis continued, and the rallies lengthened however the Mansfield team was never able to achieve the elusive points required for a set and lost the match 6-0 and 48 games to 16. Great fun day and the arvo tea was enjoyed as well.
The match of the day was between the Euroa locals Moglonemby and Seven Creeks. Every set was hard fought, with three tiebreakers played. Seven Creeks’ Rowena Ellis, Rosie Cameron, Kerry Hewlett and Jill Hayes appeared to have the edge winning all of them.
However, Moglonemby’s Deb Seach, Judy Sands, Mary Kelly and Robyn Johnson took two sets 8-4 and 8-3 and putting them up on games by the end of the day. Despite winning only two sets Moglonemby won 2-41 to Seven Creeks 4-39.
Mansfield Black was up against the top side Euroa who was sadly forced to forfeit when players were dealt with injury and illness and replacements were hard to come by.
Mansfield Blue travelled across to Benalla and faired well against a strong Benalla line-up. Clare Beecham and Jill Breadon won their set in a tiebreak and Peta Armistead and Clare won 8-2 giving Blue a good chance at taking the match.
Benalla’s Bev Gill, Maureen Jewell, Helen Chetuti and Deb Siggers had other ideas, emphatically beating Blue in the final sets 8-5 to win 4-41 to 2-28.
Terip moved into top spot for the first time this season pushing Euroa to second. Ladder: Terip 41, Euroa 39, Moglonemby 35, Benalla 32, Mansfield Black 28, Seven Creeks 19, Mansfield Blue 4, Mansfield Red 2.

Under-12 Bulldogs
A tightly fought contest was anticipated by the Dogs as they took on Wangaratta Magpies.
The Dogs were off to a good start attacking the ball with tenacity in the slippery conditions.
The backline, led by Zane Peisley, was rock solid repelling the Magpies’ forward thrusts and driving the ball deep into attacking positions.
Hugh Ross and Ben Wells were the recipients of some great ruck work from Josh Montgomery which saw some great passages of play.
The second term saw a more determined Magpies outfit. They began to move the ball at speed into attack.
Nicholas White was working hard at half-back, making many intercepts during the quarter. Ollie Parker was working into space and leading hard.
Jakobi Williams was having a good game and took some telling marks in defence.
At half-time the Bulldogs held a five-point lead.
In the third quarter the game stepped up a level and both teams were ferocious in their attack on the football.
Final score: Bulldogs 4.4.28 def Magpies 1.5.11
Goals: Ollie Parker, 2, Josh Montgomery, Ollie Wardill, 1.
Best players: Charlie Bell, Josh Montgomery, Zane Peisley, Hugh Ross, Nicholas White, Ben Wells.
Under-14 Bulldogs
It was a great day for footy in Benalla on Saturday.
With a few players unavailable, the Bulldogs had a challenge ahead of them.
Thanks goes to Levi Crisp, Riley Hilton and Charlie Bell for joining the under-14 Bulldogs after their earlier match.
It was a slow start at the Friendlies Oval apart from a much-needed goal from Nate Nicholas in the first quarter which had the Doggies trailing the Magpies by 13 points at the first break.
The second quarter was a wrestle back and forth between the two sides with only a few points added to the scoreboard by half-time, the Magpies led by 10 points.
The second half saw a bit more action on the Bulldogs scoreboard with a second goal from Nate Nicholas.
A late goal at the end of the third quarter from Luke Boulton pushed the Doggies into the lead by two points.
The Bulldogs began the fourth quarter with a quick goal from Ryder Robertson.
The tackling pressure and effort from the Bulldogs was commendable. However, the Magpies were able to find more opportunities to score and kicked three goals in the fourth to win the game by 10 points.
Final score: Magpies 6.5.41 def Bulldogs 4.7.31
Goals: Nate Nicholas 2, Ryder Robertson, Luke Boulton, 1.
Best players: Luke Boulton, Kobi Thwaites , Ryder Robertson, Nate Nicholas, Jackson Fry, Mason Butterworth.
Under-17 Bulldogs
Back at All Blacks for the third week running, the Bulldogs were to face off with Junior Magpies.
In what has become the Bulldogs’ signature slow start, the Magpies flew away to a 54-1 lead at quarter-time.
Other than some great tap work out of the centre by Callum Carter, the ball did not spend a lot of time in our forward half.
The boys were both outnumbered and outsized but they competed fiercely, showing speed and agility to win and clear the ball.
Final score: Junior Magpies 31.15.201 def Bulldogs 2.3.15
Goals: Cohen Symes, Pearce, 1.
Best players: Jaxon Brunner, Kyle Pearce, Hunter Carter, Lucas Ham,Cohen Symes, Oscar Beaton.
Under-12 Giants
Due to playing extra players on the wing from both sides, the week’s game resembled a rolling maul not unlike that of rugby union and that of the Wallabies.
Just like the Wallabies, the Giants relied on the talents of clean hands in congestion and ability to weave and work through the pack.
Jack Hart provided the grunt and determination inside the pack and was able to use his strength to burst through to space for shots on goal.
Xavier Defazio was best on ground with relentless second, third and fourth efforts
On the end of Xavier’s kicks were the players leading and demanding the ball; players such as Jude Binion, Eli McKean and Charlie Bowen provided a presence.
Tom Snell, Angus Leavold and Sam Mount played many positions across the ground and adapted well through clean hands, strong bodies in the contest and a reliability that is becoming a hallmark for these three.
Noah Cooney was moved back late in the game and greatly impressed in this position as he thwarted many an attack by an Imperials team.
While the win was pleasing for the Giants, there was a sense of frustration with the congestion they created in the forward line leading to rushed shots on goal from difficult positions.
Final scores: Giants 4.13.37 def Imperials 2.2.14
Goals: Tom Mount, 2, Jude Binion, Jack Hart, 1.
Best: Xavier Defazio, Tom Mount, Jack Hart, Eli Mckean, Jude Binion.
Under-14 Giants
The under-14s Giants last week learned what it felt like to kick a winning score and build from momentum but unfortunately, this week they could not replicate that feeling.
Tireless efforts around the ground and multiple entries into the forward line just was not enough to stem the flow of goals scored by the opposition.
With a few late withdrawals from the game, the Giants had four of our under-12s step up and play for the team and they did not look out of place at all.
While the score was not pretty to look at, there were positives to come out of the game.
Kicks to targets, linking handballs through the centre and tackling pressure were on display which is proof that the hard work that the players are putting in at training is starting to pay off.
Final score: Giants 3.3.21 def by Imperials 20.16.136
Goals: Riley McCarthy, 2, Josh Hart, 1.
Best: Josh Hart, Will Martin, Liam Fielding, Harry Skelton, Josh Mathieson, David Vanderleeuw.
Special thanks to our under-12s: Noah Cooney, Jude Binion, Charlie Bowen, Lucas Webb.
Under-17 Giants
After coming off a great win last week, the Giants wanted more.
Seven players were out of the side again but it’s been that way all year.
The Imperials got a good start early with the Giants not kicking accurately. This left the Giants working hard to get back into the quarter, which they did, just trailing at quarter-time.
The on ball brigade of Wapling, Botten and Boyle was working really hard up and down the ground with Trent Nicholson working hard in the ruck.
The undermanned Giants again worked hard all day and never stopped trying but it was not their day on the scoreboard.
It was a great team effort with the Giants having 17 scoring shots to the Imperials with 20 scoring shots.
The boys went down by 23 points but are improving each week.
The coach would like to acknowledge Josh Mathieson and Josh Hart again for stepping up and playing two games and they definitely played great games.
Final score: Giants 6.11.47 def by Imps 10.10.70
Goals: Owain Boyle, Josh Stacey, 2, Max Smyth, Ryder Levy, 1.
Best: Xavier, Will, Mitch, Max, Trent, Logan.

BENALLA TABLE TENNIS CLUB
Round two
A-grade game one saw the Rosellas’ John Bajada and Christian Squires up against the Kookaburras’ Steve McCallum and Stephen Mahon.
There was an early upset in the first match, with Steve taking the first game off John, but he was unable to hold this form in the next two games, and John was the eventual winner.
John and Christian teamed up well in the doubles and victory to them both in their second singles match meant the Rosellas won the night 4-1.
In game two for A-grade, the Owls’ Michelle Feldtmann and Gareth Burnell took on the Plovers’ Brian Harrington and Pauline Hooper.
Brian was too strong in both his singles matches, but the Plovers went down easily in the doubles and a win to Michelle in her second singles match meant the Owls took the points 3-2.
In game three for A-grade, the Possums’ Stephen Lane and John Chiswell were up against the Taipans’ William Tong and Matt Parkinson.
Alternating victories for each match throughout the night meant that the Possums doubles victory and Will’s singles victory made the last singles match the decider, and Stephen Lane was too strong once again, Possums winning 3-2.
B-grade game one saw the Mozzies’ Geraldine Maloney and Mick Kelly take on the Bullants’ John Spencer and Flynn Mosely.
It was the Bullants’ night, John and Flynn getting a jump on the Mozzies and winning the first three matches, losing the fourth and then winning the final singles match, taking the points 4-1.
In B-grade game two, the Eagles’ Alan Boyd and Lois Hermiston took on the Frogs’ Patrick Cornell and Elliott McCallum.
While the Eagles took the first singles match, it was all Frogs from then on, Patrick and Elliott teaming up well in the doubles and each winning their second singles match, Frogs winning 4-1.
B-grade game three had the Gliders’ Greg Cornell and Sienna Bajada playing the Numbats’ Chris Seeley and James Pepio.
In what started as a very tight contest, the Numbats shifted up a gear in the doubles, and remained that way for their second singles matches, Numbats winning the points for the night 4-1.
In C-grade game one the Koalas’ Chris Goode and Andrea Cathcart came up against the Crickets’ Colin McFarlane and Perry Warnock.
The Koalas turned on the fine form all night, winning five matches straight against the Crickets and giving them the points for the evening.
C-grade game two saw the Doves’ Helen Hyland and Laurence Donaldson play Falcons’ Kaye Grosser and Asher Tobias.
It was the Doves who led the way all night, Helen and Laurence seemingly unstoppable, until Kaye Grosser managed to take out her second singles match, but Falcons ultimately going down to the Doves 4-1.

The following Wednesday, May 31, the Bombers crushed the Magpies, scoring nine rubbers to two.
The Wombats defeated the Tigers, scoring seven rubbers to four, and the Eagles smashed the Emus nine rubbers to two. The Swans had a bye.

At Tatong, the Bombers’ John and Sienna Bajada and Colin Exton overwhelmed the Wombats’ Andrew Marriott, Gareth Burnell and Wyatt Marven, scoring nine rubbers to two. John Bajada and Exton each won their three singles matches and Marriott, Burnell and Sienna Bajada won a singles each.
The Bombers won both doubles matches.
At the Moorngag hall the Swanpool Swans’ Keith Bickerton, Chris Seeley and Rowhan Marshal defeated the Moorngag Tigers’ David Beer and Paul and Wesley Shea six rubbers to five.

Each team won a doubles rubber.
