GYPSY Chick, a winner of three races over 305 metres, but now with no races over that distance available to her at Tara Raceway, opened her 400-metre winning account at last Thursday’s meeting.
It has to be said she did the job pretty well for owner Shane Flink, who lives only around the corner from the track and Moorak trainer Jason Newman when winning the Hyland Fox Fast Forward TG1-4W final.
A noted front runner, Gypsy Chick was headed early from box three before taking up the running down the back from litter brother Bridgewater Bob, who the previous week in a heat had defeated her by three-quarters of a length.
From there on she was always travelling like a winner in the Category 2 prize money final, eventually defeating Mason Lava by three lengths in 23.35 seconds in what was her 11th start over the distance.
By Bernardo, Gypsy Chick is out of Spirited Bingle, a nicely-bred daughter of Collision and Kokoda Spirit who won 14 races at Mount Gambier and one at Angle Park for Portland trainer Robert Halliday.
Halliday later bred two litters with Spirited Bingle, Gypsy Chick from the second and purchased as a three-month-old pup by Flink.
“As soon as I saw the litter I knew which one I wanted – a little black bitch,” Flink said.
“Robert then reared her for me prior to Steve Elsum breaking her in and declaring that she would win races.
“She hasn’t looked back since joining Jason and Mel’s Paw Some Kennels.”
