A Geelong mechanic who caused the death of a former VFL footballer will be sentenced again after pleading guilty to dangerous driving nearly seven years after the fatal accident.
Ankur Ankur, 34, arrived in Australia when he was 20 and worked as a mechanic in Geelong.
On a rainy August 1, 2016, Ankur was driving a group of friends to Thomson for a barbecue, but went “too fast” and veered onto the wrong side of the road and into another vehicle.
The driver who was hit, former VFL footballer Patrick Deagan, later died in hospital.
Ankur was found guilty by jury of dangerous driving causing death in the Victorian County Court in October 2019 and was sentenced to a maximum of five years and three months’ imprisonment.
However, Ankur successfully appealed the conviction and was released from custody in 2021, continuing to live and work in Geelong.
In Ballarat County Court this week, Ankur pleaded guilty to the same charge.
The court was told on Wednesday that Ankur was remorseful and had suffered by his time in prison and the prospect of his deportation to India.
He was said to have consistent employment and good prospects of rehabilitation.
Judge John Smallwood will sentence Ankur at a later date and said he would impose a community corrections order and a non-custodial sentence.
He said he would consider whether a conviction should be recorded.
