New tactics are being used to stop people swimming in a dangerous Nuneaton pool as yet another plea is made to ‘keep out of that water’. Ensors Pool is notorious for being a place that people go to cool off during hot weather.
There have been a string of dangerous incidents at the open water, based in Bermuda, with teens tombstoning into it, five children being in distress as well as several tragic deaths at the pool – the most recent in 2013 when 19-year-old Jake Butler lost his life after getting into trouble in the water.
Repeated pleas are made for people to stay out of it – but they remain falling on deaf ears so new tactics are being used to stop people cooling off and playing in the water.
“Outdoor swimming is a concern of mine,” said Chief Inspector Steve Davies, northern area commander. “For me, in the north, Ensors Pool is a concern, there is a problem-solving plan around it.”
Part of this includes Nuneaton and Bedworth Borough Council putting ‘defensive planting’ around the area to make it harder for people to actually get into the water. Nuneaton firefighters are also going to start using the pool for drill training – in a bid to deter people.
Regardless of these new tactics, CI Davies said the message remains the same: “My plea, and it really is a plea, please keep out of that pool, there is all sorts in there, we don’t know what is in there.
“It is an open-bodied water, there is no structure around it and what I do not want is another fatality in that water. I have no doubt that some people will still go in there, I have no doubt someone will get injured in there. But being injured is one thing, but dying is another.
The chief inspector encourages you to go to the seaside, where there are proper life guards, adding:”For God’s sake keep out of that water.”
