An 18-year-old man has faced court over two thefts, including a ‘bizarre’ theft from a hotel room.
Kaleb Seth McGrath, 18, pleaded guilty in Gympie Magistrates Court on Friday, June 9, to charges laid over the thefts, the first of which was carried out sometime between October 14-17, 2022.
The court was told McGrath, who was living with his grandmother, stole a motorbike from her next-door neighbour’s home.
It was later found and returned to its rightful owner, but not before McGrath misled police as to why the motorbike’s key was found at his home, the court heard.
The theft of the swimwear, which Magistrate Raelene Ellis described as “bizarre,” occurred on February 20, 2023, from a hotel room.
No reason for the theft of the swimwear was offered in court by McGrath.
Defence lawyer Babu Singh told the court his client’s behaviour had been “nothing but foolish and silly” and he had since written to the owner of the bike saying sorry.
McGrath, who had no criminal history, pleaded guilty to two counts of enter premises, and one count of contravening a request by police over a separate, March 24, 2023 incident.
Mrs Ellis sentenced McGrath to 60 hours community service, to be done within one year.
No conviction was recorded.
