Uzo Aduba, star of Netflix series Orange is the New Black, has announced she’s pregnant – and she picked the perfect way to do it.
On the red carpet at last night’s Tony Awards, the American actress, 42, wore a bright orange ensemble and unbuttoned her coat to announce the happy news.
The glamorous awards ceremony, which was unscripted due to the ongoing WGA strike in Hollywood, saw Jodie Comer take the award for best leading actress.
Uzo rose to fame during the 2010s as Suzanne Warren, an inmate at Litchfield Penitentiary, the fictional women’s prison depicted in the ground-breaking series.
Initially introduced as ‘Crazy Eyes’, Suzanne was originally a problem for main character Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) but became a beloved cast member.
After the big reveal at the star-studded event, Uzo took to Instagram and shared the news with her 2.2million followers by posting an adorable video.
In the video, she can be seen holding up a set of baby grow pyjamas before saying ‘Ta-da!’ – a clip that has delighted some of her former colleagues.
Laverne Cox, who played inmate Sophia Burset on Orange is the New Black, sent a congratulatory message and called her former castmate ‘darling’.
Posting a statement with the video, Uzo said: ‘What a blessing. My husband Robert and I are so happy to enter this next chapter together as parents.’
The statement continued: ‘I get to be someone’s Mommy! I know as the three of us continue to grow, our only, ONLY goal will be to love you, little one.’
Uzo and her husband Robert Sweeting married each other in a quiet and secret ceremony in 2020, with news of their union only emerging after the fact.
The pregnancy announcement comes during a run of good news after she was announced as the new lead of Shondaland production The Residence.
This year’s big winners at the Tony Awards were new productions of The Life of Pi, Sweeney Todd, and the recent adaptation of Some Like It Hot.
Fans of Orange is the New Black were left stunned in December 2022 when it was announced that series star Brad Henke had died aged 56.
