THE Mount Gambier Gun Club hosted the South Australian State 100-target Sporting Clays Championships on Saturday.
Contested in sunny conditions with only an odd sprinkle of rain, the dull light late in the day did not prevent the afternoon shooters from obtaining high scores.
The event was held over two five-stand sporting layouts with competitors shooting 25 targets at each layout.
After the first 50 targets the layout traps were changed to add a bit more of a challenge.
Even still, some shooters obtained perfect 25/25 scores.
After four rounds of 25 targets shoot offs were needed to ascertain the winners of some grades.
Gavin Dyson and Jeremy Kent shot off for the overall honours with the former emerging victorious by one target to take out the SA State Sporting Clays Championship for 2023.
Jeremy Kent 104/110 won AA Grade with Joe Densley 97/110 in second place, while A Grade had Bruce Oakley 98/110 narrowly edge out Kevin Mules 97/110.
In B Grade Scott Fleming shot 85/100 to win over Rolf Bugden with 80/100, while Terry Howard’s 79/100 was enough to hold off Len Decandia’s score of 76/100 in C Grade.
Seasoned shooter Kevin Mules won the Veteran grade with an 89/100 from Neville Kent on 86/100.
The women’s division had Janette Densley the best of the bunch with her 85/100, with Nicola Dunn runner-up on 74/100.
Reece Fleming’s 57/100 had him win the SA State Junior Championship title from Tom Clark with 54/100.
The SA State Sporting Clays team will consist of Dyson, Kent and Oakley and they will compete at Wagga Wagga later in the year for the Australian National Sporting Clays Championships.
The next competition at the Mount Gambier Gun Club will be this Saturday, June 10.
