ADULT CRAFT: Tangle Coasters at the Troy Public Library. This month we will be making tangle coasters. Tangling is the art of creating beautiful images using simple lines, dots, and curves. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. THEATER PERFORMANCE: Opera Saratoga returns to The Mansion of Saratoga for “The Golden Age of Broadway: 1943-1964,” featuring musical gems from Broadway’s heyday. Shows at 2 and 7 pm. The Mansion of Saratoga will be featuring a pre-show meal option that features a delicious menu from Cordon Bleu trained Executive Chef Rick Bieber. THE POISON LADY: At the next meeting of the Upper Hudson Sisters in Crime chapter of The Mavens Of Mayhem, June 17, from 11:15 am to 12:15 pm, Luci Zahray, aka the Poison Lady, will offer tips on how to successfully poison someone—in fiction, of course. Luci has two great passions in life: poisons and mysteries, though she’s never poisoned anyone or tried to write a mystery. She’s a retired pharmacist with a master’s degree in toxicology from Texas A&M. STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL: Annual Strawberry Festival at Sand Lake Baptist Church 2960 NY-43, Averill Park. 1-5 pm. Fresh homemade strawberry shortcakes with homemade whipped cream; freshly picked strawberry pints (dependent on availability); a well stocked bake sale with all of your favorite homemade goodies. FALL SCREENING: Albany Medical Center’s Outpatient Physical Therapy office will hold free balance and falls screenings for the public on June 3, 10, and 17 at their location at 99 Delaware Avenue in Delmar from 9 am to noon. Screenings will include a brief questionnaire, a falls risk assessment, and a short series of balance tests for participants. A physical therapist will then discuss the results and provide recommendations based on a participant’s risk of falling. COMMUNITY FAIR: The Rensselaer Public Library is having a Community Fair on Saturday, June 17 from 11-2 to start their Summer Reading Program, “All Together Now”. AMATEUR RADIO FIELD DAY: Capital area ham radio operators from the Albany Amateur Radio Association (AARA) and Troy Amateur Radio Association (TARA) will be joining together at Thacher State Park to participate in ARRL Field Day, an annual amateur radio activity organized since 1933 by ARRL, The National Association for Amateur Radio in the United States. AARA/TARA Field Day runs from 2pm on Saturday, June 24 until 2pm on Sunday, June 25 at the Hailes Cave Area of John Boyd Thacher State Park, Voorheesville. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. Participants will be provided coloring pages and materials to work with while listening to relaxing music and being read aloud a contemporary short story by the hosting librarian. COMMUNITY MEAL: YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, Inc., located at 21 First St. in Troy, serves a weekly community meal from 5 to 6 p.m. each Tuesday. It is a free-of-charge, to-go dinner provided for YWCA residents as well as anyone in the community. All are welcome to join us each week for a free, nutritious cooked meal. Meals are prepared by a variety of volunteers including but not limited to YWCA-GCR staff, residents, community members and students. Residents are encouraged to participate in preparation of the meals and will be assisted by staff in menu planning, shopping and time management. We serve an average of 75 people per week. The YWCA-GCR also partners with community organizations to set up booths at weekly Community Meal to advertise, promote and engage guests in services. SIDEWALK WARRIORS: Each Thursday evening in the parking lot at 35 State St. in Troy, dozens of volunteers set up a large number of tables for Sidewalk Warriors’ weekly distribution. At these tables, visitors can find hot foods, sandwiches, produce, pantry items and essentials. The group often provides special distributions such as towels, linens, pillows, winter boots, underwear, socks or laundry detergent. The folks who attend the distribution may be experiencing homelessness or food insecurity, or they may simply be running short on resources at the end of the month. Set up for the weekly Sidewalk Warriors distribution events begins at 5 p.m. each Thursday, and volunteers begin serving at 6 p.m., no matter what the weather. KNIT & CROCHET GROUP: Join the Troy Public Library for a bi-weekly stitching group from 10 to 11 a.m. on every first and third Friday of the month. Whether you have experience knitting or crocheting or you want to start learning a new skill, this group is for you! Participants will work together to stitch blankets and other needed items to donate to local homeless shelters and outreach groups. Participants are also welcome to work on their own personal projects. Bring your own knitting needles and crochet hooks or use what we have available. The summer market is held every Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and features over 100 vendors. Free parking is available in the City’s 5th Street Parking Garage, Riverfront Park, the Green Island Bridge lots and on city streets. WALKING TOUR: Hosted by the Saratoga Springs Preservation Foundation. Tours are limited to 30 participants each and tickets must be purchased in advance. Tours tend to sell out quickly, so participants are advised to purchase tickets early at www.saratogapreservation.org. Cost per tour is $15 for SSPF members and $20 for non-members. All tours last approximately 90 minutes and require walking and standing on varied terrain.
