Syracuse, N.Y. — Average weekly pay for workers in Onondaga County and much of the rest of the nation and state fell in the fourth quarter, according to federal data.
Average weekly wages declined 0.8% to $1,271 for workers in Onondaga County in the fourth quarter of 2022, when compared with a year earlier, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Among large counties in New York, 11 saw wages drop, five saw increases and pay was flat in one other.
The New York county with the biggest year-over-year increase in weekly wages in the fourth quarter was Broome County at 1.8%. Average weekly pay for workers there totaled $1,102 in the period.
Oneida County was No. 2 statewide with an increase of 1.5%.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics tracks average weekly pay for workers in the nation’s 355 largest counties. In the fourth quarter last year, 240 of those, or more than 67%, saw declines in weekly wages.
Nationwide, the average weekly wage was $1,385, a drop of 2.3% from a year earlier. It was the fourth decline since 2016 and one of just 10 declines in the history of the bureau’s data, which dates back to 1978.
San Francisco, California had the biggest drop in average weekly pay in the period at more than 22%. San Mateo, California had the second-biggest drop at over 20%.
The biggest increase came in Midland, Texas, which saw a jump of 6.1%. No. 2 was Lee, Florida with an increase of 5.3%
Broome County’s increase, the biggest in New York, tied for No. 25 nationwide.
