Water slides, four pools, childcare, a gym and are due to be on offer when the NACH opens next year. See what’s inside.
The major healthcare facility is due to contain a learn to swim pool, hydrotherapy pool, a 25m lap pool, a community hall with audio-visual features, consulting areas and a water play area for children.
The NACH will also contain water slides, spa and steam rooms, a mezzanine level gym overlooking the pools and childcare facilities.
The NACH will replace the Waterworld aquatic facility and Centenary Hall on the corner of Cox Road and the Princes Highway at Norlane.
Council said Waterworld would close from late June as part of the construction process.
A pop-up gym for Waterworld members will run at the Corio Leisuretime Sports Precinct on Anakie Road.
Waterworld members have access to the city’s other swim and leisure centres.
Of the NACH facility City of Greater Geelong councillor Anthony Aitken said it represented a beacon of hope for the community.
“The council group is really proud of this investment in the northern suburbs and we really do want the local community to embrace it, access it and use it,” Mr Aitken said.
“If you are a local, this is actually a beacon of hope, because it actually reminds the local community that people do care about them.
“It’s the largest investment that council’s undertaking anywhere outside of the CBD.”
The facility is jointly funded by the City of Greater Geelong ($48.84m), the Victorian government ($8.5m) and the former federal Coalition government ($8.26m).
City of Greater Geelong mayor Trent Sullivan said the facility was more than a leisure centre.
“It’s a healthcare centre. It’s not just important for our local community, this is healthcare on a regional scale; it’s important for all the other municipalities around us,” Mr Sullivan said.
“Having improved health care, improve access to services, is so crucial in the north (of Greater Geelong), especially with reports coming out (recently that) we have the most disadvantaged community in Victoria (at Norlane).”
Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, whose electorate covers Norlane, said: “The preventive health and well-being benefits that this project will bring to the community will be far-reaching, and I’m really looking forward to visiting again upon its completion.”
Designed by architects Design Worldwide Partnership, the facility is being built by Kane Constructions.
