GRAFTON — A fire in this Rensselaer County town is under investigation after it badly damaged an apartment building early Friday morning.
Crews were called at 12:30 a.m. to 1999 Route 2 in Grafton, said James Goyer, fire chief for Grafton Volunteer Fire Company. The fire initially started in the garage before spreading to the house where tenants lived, Goyer said.
Crews got the fire under control in under two hours and were at the scene until about 6:15 a.m. The cause is under investigation by state and county agencies, Goyer said. County officials and the state Office of Fire Prevention and Control had not yet returned inquiries.
The garage was destroyed, Goyer said. The building’s seven apartments sustained smoke damage and some water damage as well, he said. No one was injured.
Goyer was unsure how many people lived in the building, and said tenants declined aid from the local American Red Cross chapter. Mary Alice Molgard of the Red Cross said there were no recorded details on displacement from the reported fire.
Departments including the Petersburgh Fire Company, Hoosick Fire Department, Berlin Volunteer Fire Company, Eagle Mills Fire Department and Poestenkill Volunteer Fire Company were also at the scene, Goyer said. The Grafton Rescue Squad also responded.
