Sonic Superstars is bringing 2D Sonic the Hedgehog back in a big way, with a striking 3D style for the classic Sonic cast. Sonic Superstars is one of the series more ambitious titles, including a four-player co-op mode and the new abilities tied to the chaos emeralds.
However, there is still plenty more that could be included in this game to entice us further. From adding more classic characters, introducing new types of special zones, or a specific character finally receiving a super form, here are a few things we hope to see appear in Sonic Superstars.
8 Classic Character Cameos: Missing In Action
Sonic Superstars is slated to include the usual suspects in its roster of returning faces. The blue hedgehog himself is present for this adventure. Naturally, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy aren’t too far behind. However, with the confirmation of Fang the Sniper’s return, several other classic characters could get a second chance in the spotlight.
Bean the Dynamite and Bark the Polar Bear are two simple choices, as they were paired with Fang in Sonic Mania. Honey the Cat, from Sonic the Fighters, could be another exciting choice to return for a cameo. The Sonic series has such a robust cast that it would be exciting to see more.
7 Boss Rush Mode: Smashing Robots At The Speed of Sound
If Sonic is known for one thing, it is his speed. A perfect inclusion to test this against would be a boss rush mode. Allowing you to compete for the fastest times with online leaderboards or collaborate in a four-player co-op could create hours of good fun.
Eggman is known for creating such diverse and unique robots that every round is sure to be different, and with the various abilities of our four playable characters, each subsequent run through the boss rush would be exciting.
6 Character Skins: Looking Sharp
The Sonic cast has had many looks across the series’ history. From the re-designs introduced in Sonic Adventure to the different outfits the characters have worn, Sonic is no stranger to customization. Sonic Superstars could expand on this, introducing various costumes and skins for the four playable characters.
Knuckles could receive his classic western hat, and Tails could get a pair of goggles to reference his appearance in Sonic Riders. Sonic could get a classic version of the soap shoes from Sonic Adventure 2, while Amy has any number of outfits she’s worn over the years.
5 New Special Zones: Hunting For The Emeralds
The special zones serve the role of a bonus stage in the Sonic series. While you can earn bonus lives from completing them, they typically offer the opportunity to acquire a chaos emerald.
While past classic Sonic titles have included the special stages from Sonic 1, 2, and 3, Sonic Superstars could strive to create a new experience by crafting its own identity. This can be done through special stages that offer a unique challenge if you’re attempting to obtain the seven chaos emeralds.
4 Online Co-op: Connecting Across The World
Sonic Superstars will include local multiplayer, allowing four friends to adventure through Northstar Island to stop Dr.Eggman. This is bound to create a chaotic and exciting experience in this game. Since we’re in the age of the internet, online play seems like something that would be a mistake not to include.
Allowing fans to experience this game together, no matter where they are, would propel Sonic Superstars into iconic status. Of course, the online servers need to be stable to create the most enjoyable gameplay experience.
3 Super Forms: Chaos Is Power
Since Sonic 2, the blue blur has been able to harness the power of the seven chaos emeralds to transform into Super Sonic. His best friend, Tails, and rival, Knuckles, would receive similar abilities in Sonic 3. However, since then, Super Tails and Super Knuckles have been notably absent except in Sonic Mania.
With Sonic Superstars set among the classic cast again, now is the perfect opportunity to bring Tails and Knuckles’ super forms back and introduce a transformation for Amy. She has been a member for many years and would complete the quartet with her gaining this power.
2 Minigames: Fun Among Friends
While Sonic Superstars will have four-player co-op to allow hours of fun, something that could add some diversity to your play time would be additional minigames. Sonic is no stranger to side modes in its titles to give you something else to do besides the main story.
These minigames could involve attempting to avoid obstacles as you race down an endless stage or an attempt to see who can acquire the most rings. Whatever Sega decided to include, a quality handful of minigames would add an extra layer of replayability to Sonic Superstars.
1 Additional Playable Characters: Join Team Sonic
With the inclusion of Tails, Knuckles, and Amy Rose, Sonic appears to have plenty of allies on this adventure. However, one can’t help but wonder what other heroes could join these four on their quest. Two natural choices would be Mighty the Armadillo and Ray the Flying Squirrel.
Between Mighty’s meteor drop move and Ray’s gliding, the two could bring even more diversity to the cast. Another intriguing option could be Metal Sonic. With his Black Shield and hyper-speed dash, Sonic’s robot copy has plenty of moves to stand out if he joins Sonic Superstars.
