WISCONSIN — Three Wisconsin suburbs ranked in the top 100 safest suburbs in the U.S., according to a report by SmartAsset.
Port Washington came in near the middle, at 42nd place. Grafton tied for 55th place. Waukesha also tied with another suburb for 100th place.
No Wisconsin suburbs made the cut for most affordable safe suburbs.
In the study, SmartAsset examined 370 suburbs of the 100 largest cities in the nation.
Safe suburbs were determined based on violent crime rate, property crime rate, the number of deaths due to traffic accidents, drug poisoning deaths and the percentage of the population engaging in excessive drinking.
Data came from the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s 2021 Uniform Crime Reporting Database and the 2022 County Health Rankings.
Port Washington was the highest ranked Wisconsin suburb, but it also had a low property crime rate, falling in 33rd place out of all suburbs. The suburb also came in alongside Grafton for lowest drug poisoning mortality, with Port Washington in 45th and Grafton at 46th.
Grafton was also notable for its lower violent crime rate, ranking 26th overall. For the lowest number of deaths due to traffic accidents, Waukesha came in at 48th.
The safest U.S. suburb on the list was Great Falls, Virginia, which had the second-lowest crime rate of only 6.81 per 100,000 residents. At the bottom of the list was Gonzales, Louisiana.
