A 22-year-old young Wynyard woman has passed away overnight, two months after she was seriously injured in a devastating crash on a Tasmanian Highway.
Macy Edwards was left in an induced coma with brain and heart trauma, multiple broken bones and fractures following the crash on the 28th of March while on her way home from a tour guide training course in Launceston.
In April, Pulse reported that Macy was in need of around-the-clock care from specialists due to the extent of her injuries, with a GoFundMe having raised over $42,000 for her family at the time – the same GoFundMe campaign has now raised over $61,000.
“Macy, just like her family, is a truly people and community-oriented soul. You may know her from Bruces or Cafe Umami, where she affectionately refers to herself as an “underwater ceramic technician” (aka a kitchenhand),” the GoFundMe read.
“She is a larrakin who is full of life, has a love of people, and is designed and destined for helping others.”
Mayor of Burnie Teeny Brumby paid tribute to Macy, the daughter of Deputy Wynyard Mayor Celisa Edwards.
“Our community aches with the Edwards family for their loss, as Macy was a vivacious, adventurous and spirited young lady, who served us coffee in several cafes on the coast,” she said.
“She will be deeply missed. I just wanted to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Edwards family on behalf of our North West Coast community at this time.”
Police said in a statement in March that initial investigations suggested that a brown Mazda sedan, driven by Macy, lost control in wet conditions while negotiating a slight descent.
“Investigations suggest the vehicle crossed into the path of a white Toyota flat tray utility, also with a single female occupant, travelling in the opposite direction,” Police said.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
