Brad Friedel thinks Tottenham Hotspur should look to replace Hugo Lloris with Brentford’s David Raya or MLS’s rising star, Dorde Petrovic.
The Premier League legend thinks Dorde Petrovic has been ‘excellent’ in the MLS for New England Revolution and the Serbian is someone that could become Tottenham’s new number one, as he told Sky Sports News (06/06/23).
Even though Hugo Lloris has 12 months left to run on his contract, the 36-year-old has run his course and he will depart this summer.
Even when the World Cup-winning French goalkeeper was donning the gloves, there were huge question marks over that role and how a new face needed to be brought in.
Well, now those in the Tottenham boardroom, after the arrival of Ange Postecoglou, have to be pretty quick to bring in a new face because back-up option, Fraser Forster, isn’t the answer.
Nonetheless, when discussing who Spurs could bring in to be their new shot-stopper, Friedel gave a brief mention to Raya, before dropping 24-year-old Petrovic’s name into the hat.
“I think Raya has been good,” said Friedel. “There is a goalkeeper over here in the MLS. Dorde Petrovic, who took over from Matt Turner. He is excellent.
“Depending on the budget Tottenham want to spend on a goalkeeper, if Hugo (Lloris) is going to leave, then there are a lot of goalkeepers they could go and lure.”
Area of concern for Postecoglou
If Harry Kane leaves Tottenham, then that striker role will become Postecoglou’s biggest worry because of who he will have to replace.
But if he stays put, then one of the biggest areas of concern is going to be the goalkeeper.
With the Greek-born Australian set to change the club’s style of play to a more forward-thinking style, then the goalkeeper is going to be crucial in how Spurs build-up play and getting that part of the pitch right is going to be very crucial.
