Police said the Toyota Rav4 carrying the trio and a Nissan X-trail carrying the runaway pair collided at the intersection of Banksia St and Jasmine St in Botany, just before 8pm.
“The occupants of the Toyota — a 42-year-old man, 41-year-old woman and 5-year-old boy — all escaped injury and safely exited their vehicle before the Rav4 caught alight,” NSW Police said.
The Nissan was found abandoned nearby.
“A male driver and a female passenger were witnessed abandoning the X-trail on Bay Street, Botany,” NSW Police said.
No arrests have yet been made, and police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.
