World Environment Day, held annually on 5 June, brings together millions of people from across the globe, engaging them in the effort to protect and restore the Earth.
This year also marks the event’s 50th anniversary.
The theme for World Environment Day on 5 June 2023 will focus on solutions to plastic pollution under the campaign #BeatPlasticPollution.
One local organisation participating in World Environment Day is Gladstone Conservation Council Inc. (GCC), which will have a stall at EcoFest at Tondoon Gardens.
GCC coordinator Anna Hitchcock said GCC was formed in February 2012 by a group of locals working towards a positive outcome for the Gladstone environment and community.
“If you want to get involved in World Environment Day, we’d love to have you! One way to participate is to attend EcoFest on 4 June and support local environmental groups,” she said.
“You can also volunteer your time or donate to local conservation organisations like us to support our efforts in protecting and preserving local ecosystems.
“Don’t forget to educate yourself and others by learning more about local environmental issues and sharing your knowledge with others.”
Ms Hitchcock said GCC is currently focusing on key environmental issues through different programs.
“We have three main programs: Repower, which looks at renewable energy issues in the local region, Rewild, which is currently focused on our community nursery project, and Regenerate, which is all about soil restoration trials,” Ms Hitchcock said.
“If you’re interested in contributing to the conservation and protection of local ecosystems in Gladstone specifically, we’re looking for volunteers to help with our community nursery stalls in Gladstone and Agnes Water.
“No native plant knowledge is required, just some willing hands to help us raise some money for the group.
“If you’re looking for educational programs or resources on environmental issues, we have lots of information and resources on our website, Facebook and Instagram pages.
“We also want to grow our Tik Tok page and would love someone who could run it.”
