Perth residents have been told to bunker down with the city and surrounding areas placed under a severe thunderstorm warning.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the development of severe thunderstorms for the greater Perth area, which stretches from Guilderton in the north to Dawesville and Dwellingup in the south, is likely on Sunday night.
The Department of Fire and Emergency Services advised that people in Fremantle, Willagee, Rossmoyne, Armadale, Henderson, Anketell, Byford, Gosnells, Jandakot and Roleystone could be affected.
Severe thunderstorms have been detected on the weather radar near Rottnest Island and waters west of Fremantle, which are heading east and may carry heavy rainfall, damaging winds and may lead to flash-flooding.
“This weather is not unusual for this time of year, but could damage homes and make travel dangerous,” a DFES statement said.
Bunbury reported 27mm of rain in just 30 minutes at 4.15pm on Sunday.
Rottnest reported a 96km/h wind gust at 5:12 pm.
A severe thunderstorm warning for the south-west and south-coastal districts was cancelled before 7pm on Sunday evening.
Those in the affected areas should stay inside, stay away from windows, unplug electrical appliances and avoid using landline telephones if there is lightning. People boating, swimming or surfing have been told the leave the water.
Meantime, a severe weather warning is in place for the central west, lower west, south-east coastal, Great Southern, Central Wheatbelt and parts of the Gascoyne, Goldfields Eucla and south coastal districts for Monday morning.
The warning area includes Perth, Esperance, Geraldton, Kalgoorlie, Merriden, Moora, Narrogin, Norseman and Northam.
Damaging winds of more than 90km/h are possible in the warning area which could cause damage to homes and property.
