BOYS TENNIS
WIAA State Tournament
MADISON – Championships were not meant to be for area tennis players at the WIAA Division 1 and 2 state individual tennis tournament at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
In Division 1, top seed Oscar Corwin, a junior at Brookfield East, completed a one-loss season (34-1 overall) with a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over De Pere’s Nicholas Balthazor in the championship match.
Balthazor finishes the season with a 26-1 record.
Balthazor had advanced to the championship match with a 6-4, 6-3 win over third-seeded Ethan Bo of Middleton. Corwin, meanwhile, advanced with a 6-3, 7-5 win over his teammate and No. 4 seed Sam Klein.
Bo won the third-place match, defeating Klein 6-3, 2-6, 10-5.
Nolan Schaub of Union Grove defeated Ethan Yu of Madison West 7-6 (3), 6-1 in the fifth-place match.
In Division 1 doubles, Neenah’s Satchel Moss and Ben Kotchen (26-5) had an opportunity to play for a fifth-place finish but lost their first match Saturday 6-4, 6-4 to Aaditya Tiwari and Gabe Weitzer of Brookfield Central. Sam Weinbach and Gokul Kamath finished in fifth with a 7-5, 3-6, 10-5 win over Tiwari and Weitzer.
Lincoln Marshall and Daniel Egelhoff of Marquette University defeated Cedarburg’s Chatton Haws and Keenan Haws 7-6 (5), 6-4 in the championship match.

The third-place match went to Alex Aranda and Henry Vizgaitis of Nicolet who defeated Neel Mukherjee and Jonathan Kim of Middleton 6-4, 2-6, 10-3.
In Division 2 doubles, Xavier’s Nick Bittner and Nate Hall (20-1) finished in third place with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 win over Alex Schmidt and Luke Yoon of New Berlin Eisenhower.
Bittner and Hall played for third after falling to Vibhu Guda and Sanjit Madireddi of Brookfield Academy in the semifinals 6-4, 7-5.
Brookfield Academy’s Peyton Zeiler and Garv Bhasin won the Division 2 doubles title with a 2-6, 6-1, 10-5 win over Guda and Madireddi.
Fifth place went to Miles Gourlay and Jakc Gilpin of University School-Milwaukee with a 6-4, 6-2 win over The Prairie School’s Calvin Sharpe and Jonathan Orth.
In Division 2 singles, St. Mary Catholic’s Wesley Auth (17-4) finished in fifth place with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Kyle Hehli of West Salem. Auth defeated Sonu Beeram of New Berlin Eisenhower 6-2, 6-4 earlier on Saturday. Hehli advanced to the fifth-place match with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Joshua Horak (19-7) of Xavier.
Defending champion Max Watchmaker of University School-Milwaukee defeated second-seeded Adrian Yin of Brookfield Academy 6-4, 2-6, 10-6. Watchmaker is the first repeat champion in either WIAA tennis division since Pablo Dale of Brookfield Academy in 2018 and 2019. Kohler’s Casey Johnson was a repeat champion in 2016 and 2017.
The third-place match was won by Anderson Fortney of Aquinas, who defeated Hayden Latus of Catholic Memorial 6-4, 6-2.
GIRLS SOCCER
Division 1 regional final
Bay Port 1, Kimberly 1
KIMBERLY – The Pirates, after two scoreless overtime periods, defeated the Papermakers on penalty kicks.
After a scoreless first half, Senah Hanes put Kimberly ahead 1-0 with Jenna Scholz getting the assist.
Bay Port tied the game 19 minutes later to send the game to overtime.
Division 3 regional finals
Notre Dame 3, Ripon 0
GREEN BAY – The Tritons took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Lacey Fabry and Abby Lamere in the win over the Tigers.
Monika Stoik scored for Notre Dame in the second half.
Mia Lemkuil assisted on both first-half goals for Notre Dame.
Hailee Scheier had 17 saves for Ripon.
Plymouth 5, Seymour 0
PLYMOUTH – The Panthers, who led 1-0 at halftime, got two goals from Hailey Batzner and one each from Melina Knowles and Cora Nothem in the win over the Thunder.
Batzner, Knowles and Sarah Welsch each had an assist for Plymouth, while goalkeeper Paige Kurtz had two saves.
Xavier 1, Denmark 1
DENMARK – The Hawks defeated the Vikings 5-3 on penalty kicks after playing to a 1-1 tie through regulation and two overtime periods.
Division 4 regional final
Kiel 10, St. Mary Catholic 0
KIEL – Taylor Schad scored eight goals to lead the Raiders to the win over the Zephyrs.
Taavi Saeger and Maddie McDole had Kiel’s remaining goals.
