A man accused over a violent beating that left a neighbour fighting for his life has been granted bail under strict conditions.
Adam Nicholas Goedhart, 32, is charged with intent to cause grievous bodily harm over an incident about 1.50am on November 4, 2021 at McAlister St.
Police allege officers went to a housing complex where they found Ian George Raines, 60, with significant head injuries.
As a result Mr Goedhart was arrested and charged – the offence carries a maximum of life imprisonment for anyone convicted.
He has been in custody since his arrest.
The matter was mentioned in Mackay Magistrates Court on Thursday as a part-heard bail application.
The court heard Magistrates Bronwyn Hartigan had adjourned the case over concerns raised in a psychiatrist report and Mr Goedhart’s mother’s position about her son’s mental health.
Mr Goedhart has been diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.
Ms Hartigan said his mother accepted her son’s diagnosis and strongly supported that he required medication.
She told Mr Goedhart she would give him a chance on bail to comply with whatever orders given “to maintain good mental health status”.
Ms Hartigan warned him if he did not comply he would go back into custody on remand.
The court heard Mr Goedhart must live with his mother in the Moreton Bay region.
“The only thing that I want him to focus on is his mental health,” Ms Hartigan said.
He must also attend a medical centre and comply with any orders, take medication, release information about his medical attendance to police, and comply with no contact orders.
The court heard this case had been referred to the Mental Health Court.
Matters were adjourned to September 14.
