A reportedly stolen car travelling at high speed has crashed into another vehicle and rolled multiple times off the Bruce Highway north of Mackay. Goon bags were found nearby.
Emergency services were called to the scene of a two vehicle crash at Yalboroo, about 50 minutes drive north of Mackay, just before 5pm on Friday.
A 45-year-old man was inside a black hatchback that was heading south towards Mackay when it rear-ended a white sedan, and then rolled multiple times, before coming to rest off the highway just metres from a culvert.
The car showed evidence the vehicle had scraped along the road on its roof while rolling.
Police officers found the car with its airbags deployed, windscreen smashed, and wheels buckled.
Alcohol was also reportedly found inside the back seat, and nearby the vehicle were two boxes of sauvignon blanc, one full and the other empty.
It is unknown whether the boxes came from the car or were there before the crash.
It is understood the car may have been stolen with Acting Sergeant Steve Littlewood saying the vehicle was of interest to police.
“Investigations are ongoing from witnesses,” Sergeant Littlewood said, adding the male driver was in “quite good physical condition” when he was loaded into the ambulance to be taken to Mackay Base Hospital.
The driver had initially been trapped in the destroyed car.
The male driver of the white sedan, believed to be in his 20s, was unharmed in the crash with the vehicle coming to a stop about 100m away from the point of impact.
It is understood the black car may have been stolen from Townsville and was travelling well above the speed limit when the crash occurred.
The Forensic Crash Unit were investigating.
