As part of the highly anticipated Art Week Exeter, Exeter Library is set to host a summer evening extravaganza featuring live music and creative workshops in their latest instalment of Library Lates.
Ever since the relaunch of Library Lates after the lockdown in July last year, these after-hours parties have become a regular highlight on Exeter Library’s calendar. The upcoming event is scheduled for Friday, June 16, and will run from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm.
Callum Elliott-Archer, the Centre Manager at Exeter Library, expressed his enthusiasm, stating: “The hugely popular Library Lates are now set as a regular fixture three times a year in our calendar. While the sell-out event last November provided a cozy winter gathering in our welcoming space, this time, we’re bringing the flavor of a summer party. It’s an opportunity to come together again, explore your creativity, enjoy live music, and have a drink with friends.”
The evening’s musical line-up promises to be exceptional:
Haytor (9:30 – 10:30 pm) Haytor, a Devon-based band, will treat the audience to their charismatic indie rock performance. With high energy and eccentric stage presence, they combine melodic vocals, lively arrangements, and jangly guitars to create their unique sound. Haytor’s lineup includes vocalist Austin Robison, bassist Cameron Robison, guitarist Jonny Lewis, and drummer Cal Verney.
Sounds Like Lily (8 – 9 pm) Totnes-based vocalist Lily Mackay and guitarist Rowland O’Connor will captivate the audience with their blend of jazz and neo-soul. Their reflective songs feature catchy grooves and melodious instrumentation. Having recently released their debut EP ‘Glad I Met Ya’ on all streaming platforms, Sounds Like Lily is a budding duo worth watching.
In addition to the live performances, attendees can participate in various workshops throughout the evening:
Letterpress Workshop with Double Elephant Print Workshop (7:30 – 10:30 pm) Led by George Barron, this workshop offers a chance to experiment with Double Elephant’s vintage wooden type collection. Participants can print an Art Week Exeter-inspired poster on a recycled old map and add their own text. It serves as a great introduction to the popular form of printmaking.
Love Cuts Poetry Collage Workshop (7:30 – 8:45 pm with reading at 9 pm) Led by spoken-word artist Chris White, Love Cuts allows participants to get creative by being a bit destructive. In this open workshop, attendees will cut up books, mix up words, and create their own poems. The workshop concludes with a reading of the night’s collaborative work by Edward Tripp, the surreal stand-up poet and current Bard of Exeter.
Origami Workshop with Beatrice Corsetti (7:30 – 9:30 pm) Beatrice Corsetti will provide old road maps for attendees to create animals and creatures through the Japanese art of paper folding known as origami. This workshop is suitable for everyone and offers benefits such as stress reduction, improved hand-eye coordination, boosted creativity, patience, and persistence.
Annoying Noises in Public Places with Alfresco Skronk Squadron An unconventional art installation, the Alfresco Skronk Squadron will capture sounds from the outside world and familiar objects using microphones and a hydrophone. The resulting cacophony of unreliable devices will create a unique auditory experience.
FabLab Digital Making Tutor Marcus Brown will showcase three vinyl-cutting demonstrations, highlighting the creation and cutting of designs using FabLab equipment. These designs can be used for various purposes, including signs, window decor, vehicle decor, and heat-pressing onto garments.
Throughout the evening, Bar Nova will operate, offering a selection of beers, wines, spirits, soft drinks, and snacks.
Tickets for the event are priced at £8, or £6 for concessions (O65, U16, student, disabled), with an additional booking fee if purchased through Eventbrite. Please note that the event is open to individuals aged 16 and above. Tickets can be purchased at Exeter Library on Castle Street, by phone at 01392 407027, or via Eventbrite.
