GARDAI investigating the fatal assault of a woman found dead at a house in Dundalk have arrested a man.
The body of Catherine Henry was discovered in “unexplained circumstances” at a property on Bridge Street last Wednesday evening.
Catherine, who was aged in her 60s, was found lying face down by concerned neighbours.
It’s understood the woman had lived at the property for a number of years and was known to locals in the area.
The case was initially being treating as “unexplained”, but investigators suspected the woman may have been assaulted.
A murder investigation was launched following the completion of a post mortem examination.
Gardai trawled through CCTV images from around the Bridge Street area as part of the probe.
Today, investigating cops said they had arrested a man in his 20s in connection with their probe and that he is being quizzed by gardai.
A spokesperson said: “Gardaí investigating the fatal assault of a woman in her 60s whose body was discovered at a residence on Bridge Street, Dundalk, County Louth, on Wednesday 24th May 2023, have arrested a man as part of this investigation.
“The man, 20s, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently being detained at a Garda station in Louth under the provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.
“Investigations are ongoing.”
The local community was left shocked by the devastating tragedy.
Last week, one told the Irish Sun: “It’s just awful to think that a poor woman has lost her life.
“No-one quite knows how she has died and all we can do is let the Gardai do their job.
“Everyone’s thoughts will be with her family at this time.”
