Children can eat free at these Southeast Texas summer meal sites

According to the Texas Department of Agriculture website, more than 3 million children in the state receive lunches from the National School Lunch Program, a federally assisted meal program that serves “nutritious, low-cost or free lunches” to students in public and non-profit private schools across the state. If at least 10% of a school’s students are eligible to receive free or reduced lunches, Texas state law requires that a school must participate in the School Breakfast Program.

Furthermore, schools or other contracting entities with 80% or more free or reduced-price meals participating in the National School Lunch Program must provide breakfast at no charge for all children.

To help combat summer food insecurity, several local entities are contracting with the United States Department of Agriculture to provide free meals to children and teens ages 18 and younger and enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old throughout the summer. There are no income requirements or registration needed.

All breakfasts served from 10-10:30 a.m.; all lunches served from 12:30-1 p.m.; meals served Monday through Friday except where noted; and meals will be served until Aug. 11 except where noted.
