TO mark the first day of summer, a prime riverside location in Limerick city is being transformed into a recreational space for people to enjoy.
Limerick City and County Council has launched the Summer at Honan’s Quay initiative – an activity schedule which will see events taking place across the summer.
Honan’s Quay surrounds Arthur’s Quay Park and is located directly across from Shannon Rowing Club.
Motorists are being advised, the road at Honan’s Quay, which passes under Sarsfield Bridge, will be closed from this Thursday until September 1, to promote safe public use and enjoyment of this riverside site.
On four Saturdays throughout the season, there are promises of family fun events, live music, games, stage acts and street performers.
Commenting on the summer initiative, Director of Service for Planning, Environment and Place-Making, Vincent Murray said: “This exciting Public Realm initiative will showcase and promote the use of this riverside site. The planned events will create a festive atmosphere for both young and old to enjoy – last year, the ‘Limerick Urban Forest’ event was well received by the public and we will replicate and improve upon this success.”
The first of four fun days takes place this Saturday, June 3 with activities that include: Insta Bingo, free children’s art workshops, an ice-cream stand, Libra Strings – a teenage classical strings octet, Music Generation presents Limerick Voices, face painting, kids disco with DJ Will Softly, stilt walkers and circus skills, as well as a Hot Jazz Quintet – Jazz fusion led by John Daly.
Additional fun days are being organised for Saturday, July 1, Saturday, August 5 and Saturday, August 26 – with details to follow.
The Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Cllr Francis Foley referenced the chosen location as being a “key riverside location at the heart of the city”.
“As the school holidays begin, Summer at Honan’s Quay gives people an additional space to enjoy in a key riverside location at the heart of Limerick city.
“The planned activities, street games and fun days will all add to a festive feeling in the city throughout the summer months, and this is a great initiative, which I hope to see people take full advantage of this space.”
Table tennis tables and large scale street games are free to enjoy while the mobile urban forest is relocating from Colbert Station to Honan’s Quay to offer seating and shade.
The new mural on the University of Limerick City Campus building provides a colourful backdrop, adding to the festive vibe.
