SOUTH SHORE — A South Shore landmark district’s annual community garage sale is this weekend, and participating households encourage neighbors and visitors alike to join in on the day of “positive loitering.”
This year’s Jackson Park Highlands garage sale is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday in the 6700-7000 blocks of Cregier, Constance, Bennett and Euclid avenues.
Items for sale include electronics, vintage furniture and home decor, clothing, tools, antiques, a large chandelier, an oak roll-top desk and chair, and more.
For the first time, this year’s sale will feature a digital map of the three dozen or so participating homes, along with some items to expect at each location. Five new households will participate this year. To view the map, click here.
Credit: Provided“We pride ourselves on being a staple in the community — people can expect this garage sale to take place every year on the first Saturday in June,” said Lisa Howard, the garage sale committee chair. She organized this year’s event with neighbors Pat Pike and Shara Kamal.
A lemonade stand will be open at 6759 S. Bennett Ave. while neighbors at 6927 S. Bennett Ave. will sell hot dogs, chicken wings, turkey tips and hot links.
Participating homes will post yellow signs and balloons to alert shoppers to their sales. Neighbors will encourage “positive loitering” throughout the day with the lemonade stand and baked goods at various locations, while “plenty of neighbors” will be walking dogs, riding bikes and doing other activities, Howard said.
“Our community is culturally diverse, multigenerational, and it’s just a welcoming place for people to come and shop,” she said. “Even if they’re not shopping, they’re just visiting with other neighbors and having a really good time fellowshipping.”
Howard expects several hundred shoppers to come through the neighborhood.

Credit: ProvidedLast year’s sale — the first since the pandemic began — “was the largest one that we’ve had in decades” in terms of sellers and customers, said Howard, who took over as lead organizer from Camille Billingslea after the 2019 sale.
“This has been going on for over 40 years, so it was just great to see everyone out in person once again,” she said. “It was just a [great] representation of our tight-knit, family-oriented community.”
