THERE are plenty of Aussies showing constant improvement at the collegiate level, with the big stage not fazing some of the best prospects the country has to offer.
In her third season in the NCAAW, Georgia Amoore took things up a notch and delivered her best numbers since heading to the United States.
A crucial member of the Virginia Tech Hokies, the guard was one of the team’s best performers, utilising all she had to offer and helping the team to several wins.
Amoore was recruited to the Hokies in 2020 following the pandemic-affected season that was canceled. Highly rated by the coaching staff, the guard was immediately injected into the starting lineup, and made her presence felt with a solid shotmaking ability.
Amoore averaged 11 points in both her freshman and sophomore campaigns, ensuring the team had another scoring option if she was given the time and space. It was an impressive start to her collegiate career, but the Ballarat native took things to another level in the 2022/23 season.
She was much more aggressive with the ball in hand and her increased output on the offensive end reflected that mindset. Amoore pushed her points per game up to 16.3, which was enough to make her Virginia Tech’s second-highest scorer for the season, behind only Elizabeth Kitley.
After working her way into the season nicely, Amoore exploded as a scorer to close out the fixture, averaging 22.2 points in her final eight games. It was a glimpse of the player she had threatened to become all season, and a fantastic way to finish things off for the season.
Although she had some big numbers in the points column, Amoore’s finest performance came against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. In that match, she delivered a stunning triple-double, stuffing the stat sheet with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists in a magnificent showing.
The guard was the team’s primary playmaker as well, and thrived as a passer. She averaged a team-high 4.6 assists per game, often combining well with Kitley in the pick and roll to penetrate the opposition’s defensive structures.
Amoore has always been a highly touted prospect out of Australia, and continued to live up to those expectations during her junior campaign.
The 2022/23 season was the guard at her damaging best, hurting the opposition as both a scorer and playmaker. With her senior year on the horizon, Amoore should continue to get even better and live up to her potential as a member of the Hokies.
