Each year the Holbrook event attracts stud sheep breeders and more than 150 secondary school students from throughout the Riverina, southern NSW and Victoria.
The first day of the fair is Schools’ Day, and is dedicated to educational workshops for participating schools before they compete in the Schools’ Interbreed Competition.
Thursday was the Open Sheep Competitions between the different breeds, and the judging of fleeces.
It concluded on the Friday morning with the Open Sheep Interbreed classes.
Agriculture teachers Gary Webb and Robyn O’Leary and 23 enthusiastic students set off for the show last week with big expectations.
And they were well and truly fulfilled.
“We have had a fabulous first day of showing in the schools competition,” Mrs O’Leary said.
“Billabong HS, TRAC HS, Ballarat Grammar, Kandos, St Paul’s Walla Walla and Hay War Memorial all exhibited their sheep.”
Ryan Bauer and ram 2215 placed first in the milk tooth over 12 month class and Shaylee Burt paraded ram 2223 to receive fourth place.
Ryan later paraded his ram to be awarded the Reserve Champion Ram title.
Kate Tilley paraded ram 2208 into second place in the two tooth ram class.
There were five ewes entered in the milk tooth ewe under 1.5 years.
“This was a big class of over 12 ewes, and we took out the top five places. How awesome is that,” Mrs O’Leary said.
Maggie Bramley and ewe 2216 took out first place, Lilly McNamara and ewe 2205 were second, Charlotte Rafferty and ewe 2222 were third, Rosie Steel and ewe 2204 were fourth and Chelsea Singleton and ewe 2224 were fifth.
In the two tooth ewe class, Cheyenne Tucker and ewe 2220 were awarded first place.
In a huge four tooth ewe class, Mikayla McDonnell with ewe 2121 and Demi Marshall parading her lamb 2301 took out first place.
In the pair of ewes class, Lillian Baker with ewe 2222 and Lilliana MeyerVale with ewe 2224 were awarded first place.
Finley was also awarded joint second place in the category, Lincoln Robertson with ewe 2121 and her lamb 2301 paraded by Mikayla McDonnell and Charlotte Rafferty with ewe 2104 and her lamb 2302 paraded by Chelsea Singleton.
