Man allegedly ‘struck one-year-old baby with a bottle at her first birthday party’ – as she is airlifted to hospital

A baby girl rushed to hospital with serious head injuries was allegedly struck in the head with a bottle during her first birthday party last Saturday night.
Police said the infant suffered a fractured skull after a 26-year-old man allegedly assaulted her with a ‘blunt’ object in the Northern Territory town of Tennant Creek, 500km north of Alice Springs.
Northern Territory Police allege that the man was intoxicated when he assaulted the infant – possibly by mistake, when he threw a bottle at another partygoer and instead allegedly hit the child.
Grave fears are held for the infant’s welfare.

The one-year-old child was airlifted by Royal Flying Doctor Service to the Adelaide Women’s and Children’s Hospital.
It is believed the child is in a critical condition, although the hospital declined to disclose give details unless the child’s parents gave permission.
The man has been charged with aggravated assault, unlawfully causing serious harm and recklessly endangering serious harm.
The 26-year-old who has previously been charged with unlawfully cause serious harm was due to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on Tuesday.
