The Blues can now look forward to life back in the third tier after their promotion in the play-off final.
And their 2023/24 campaign will see United renew acquaintances with a number of opponents when their fixtures are released at 9am on Thursday, June 22.
There should be some memorable away days at relatively nearby opponents such as Blackpool, Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, with Derby County another big League One side on the agenda.
Other northern opponents for Paul Simpson’s side will include Fleetwood Town and one of Sheffield Wednesday or Barnsley, who meet in Monday’s League One play-off final.
Among the longer trips are encounters with sides United have not faced for some time.
They will take on Reading for the first time since 1982.
And a clash with Derby will be a first in the league since 1984.
The shorter trip to Wigan will end a wait of 23 years for a fixture against the Latics.
Carlisle’s longest trips of the season, meanwhile, will involve games against Portsmouth and Exeter City.
Other southern opposition for the Cumbrians and their fans include Charlton Athletic, Wycombe Wanderers, Cambridge United, Cheltenham Town, Bristol Rovers and their fellow promoted sides Leyton Orient, Stevenage and Northampton Town.
United will officially start life back in that division on the opening weekend of the league season on August 4-6.
