On Saturday 27th of May 2023 the Duluth community garden program held there 2023 plant and seed sale event.
This year’s sale was held at Peace Church, providing another easy way for the Duluth community to shop for high quality, locally grown vegetable starts and seeds.
This year thanks to a grant from Essentia Health, they were able to offer plants on a sliding scale in order to increase accessibility. So, customers with qualifying incomes were able to receive discount om their purchases.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for the organization as the proceeds they get go to support community gardens programs by providing the materials needed which are sometimes expensive.
We spoke to the Duluth community garden program manager, Megan Wylder, on the importance of the event.
“We know that transplants are more expensive than seedlings. Not everyone’s able to afford transplants for their garden, also not everyone is able to start their own seedlings. Not everyone has the space or the time. So, this is a way that we’re hoping to increase the accessibility of gardening in our community by being able to offer these awesome transplants at a lower cost.”>
In total the organization manages twenty-two community gardens across Duluth, which includes over 200 plots, one communal garden, and public giving garden spaces.
