Premier Daniel Andrews is supporting a federal review of the Geelong Fast Rail.
It is one of several major infrastructure projects the Albanese government has significant doubts about, as part of its 90-day review.
The Premier accused the former Coalition government of talking a big game about the benefits of the joint state and Commonwealth initiative.
“It’s being reviewed, I’m not here to pre-empt the review, I don’t know what the review will say,” he said during a visit to Geelong.
“It’s just true to acknowledge that many, many commitments made by the former federal Liberal government do not stack up.”
Mr Andrews said a very big game was talked about how fast the trains would be between Geelong and Melbourne.
“It was almost a fantastical promise for very, very small amount of money in the scheme of things.”
Meantime the Premier said talks were continuing with the Albanese government over possible funding for the 2026 Commonwealth Games.
The City of Greater Geelong raised concerns over how it would pay for the events that would be held in the city as one of four regional hubs.
No money was announced in the federal budget on Tuesday night for the Games.
