OSHKOSH — The West Bend East, Slinger and Hartford boys tennis teams each advanced a flight on Thursday to the WIAA individual state tournament, as East’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Max Mollwitz and John Pfaff advanced with a fourthplace finish, while Hartford’s Aaron Hoffmann won the No. 1 singles title and Slinger’s Jon Olafsson finished third.
Mollwitz and Pfaff opened their day with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Menasha to clinch a berth in the state tourney. They would go on to fall 6-4, 6-0 to Manitowoc Lincoln’s duo before settling for fourth place with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat in the thirdplace match to Oshkosh West.
Hartford’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Brady Kuepper and Sean McCune fell 6-0, 6-2 in the opening round, while West Bend West’s duo of Keegan Kainz and Traynor Gieryn also fell in the first round to eventual No. 1 doubles champ Neenah.
At No. 2 doubles, East’s Killian McNulty and Dawson Peterson bounced back from a 6-3, 7-5, opening- round loss to finish third in the flight with a 6-3, 2-6, 12-10 triumph. East’s No. 3 doubles team of Tyler Tennies and Sam Wiedmeyer fell 6-0, 6-4 in the opening round before a close, three-set defeat in the third-place match, 4-6, 7-5, 11-9.
Hoffmann secured his state berth early with a 6-1, 6-0 victory in the opening round. He then dispatched North Shore Conference rival Olafsson 6-1, 6-3, before battling for a three-set victory at the championship match, 7-6(6), 6-7(4), 11-9 over Oshkosh West. Olafsson — who won his first-round match 0-6, 6-4, 10-3 — would finish third after a 6-1, 6-2 victory in the consolation match over Fond du Lac’s Lleyton Batchelder.
West Bend settles for North Shore Conference draw
WEST BEND — The West Bend girls soccer team battled to a draw on Thursday, ending in a 1-1 tie with North Shore Conference rival Port Washington.
Kambell Kletzine score the team’s only goal in the 43rd minute off an assist by Hope Schensema. West Bend nearly hung on for the win until Port Washington scored in the 79th minute for the draw.
