WHAT WE’RE LOOKING AT
- The Western Bulldogs have won their previous six matches at TIO Stadium.
- Gold Coast has covered the line in four of their last five matches.
- The Western Bulldogs previous four matches have hit the under.
THE MATCH-UP
The Gold Coast Suns and in-form Western Bulldogs travel up north to face each other in Darwin on Saturday night. The Dogs have a handsome record at this venue, winning their previous six matches at TIO Stadium.
Stuart Dew’s Suns held off the charging Lions for as long as they could in the Q-clash last week before succumbing to Brisbane’s potent forward line in the final term. Gold Coast conceded 16 second-half goals to eventually lose the match by 43 points.
Meanwhile, after a horrid 2-3 start to the 2023 campaign, Luke Beveridge’s outfit has turned things around, winning their previous five matches. However, none of those victories have come against opponents higher than them on the ladder, although it did cruise to victory last time out against the in-form Crows in Ballarat.

THE KING IN DARWIN
It’s been another year of showing glimpses of good footy for the Gold Coast Suns. However, it looks like another mediocre year without a finals appearance is on the cards, with the midfield struggling without the bullish Touk Miller.
Ben King struggled in his return to footy at the start of the season after missing all of last year with a torn ACL injury. However, he has hit his stride in recent weeks, kicking at least two goals in his previous six matches.
Nick Holman has been a serviceable but consistent contributor for the Suns this season and finds himself at a value price to kick a goal in his 100th match. Holman is an accurate set shot with at least one goal in his previous six matches.

BROWNLOW BONT?
A strong indication that the Bulldogs are on the right track has been their obvious improved midfield performances. Skipper Marcus Bontempelli has been excellent all season and is one of the favourites for the Brownlow Medal.
Bont has been in and around the 25 disposal mark all year and is at a solid price with bet365 to achieve that total again. Considering he is coming off his third 30+ disposal match of the season, it bodes well for him against an underperforming Gold Coast midfield. Not to mention he has had 25+ disposals in his previous three matches.
Oskar Baker is taking his opportunity at the Western Bulldogs since moving from Melbourne with both hands and is finding himself consistently in the starting 22. This is already the most games he has played in a single season (10) in his career thus far.
Baker’s high kick to handball ratio is one of the reasons keeping him in the side and has had 15+ disposals in seven of his previous eight matches.
FIRST GOAL KICKER
If Gold Coast are to kick the first goal of the match, it’s most likely to come via the in-form Ben King. He has kicked the first goal of the match in 20% of his matches so far in this campaign and is the only consistent multiple goal kicker for the Suns.
THE PICK
The Western Bulldogs enter the match as the favourites on Saturday night and I tend to agree. They are on a strong run of form, winning their previous five matches against Fremantle (A), Hawthorn (H), GWS (A), Carlton (A) and Adelaide (H).
It’s hard to see them losing against the lacklustre Suns and five of the previous six meetings between the two sides have fallen between the margin of 1-39.
